CAREER ADVICE
Here’s why you suck at selling yourself

The left is what you think people looking at your profile are thinking…
…The right is what they are actually thinking
You’re going to step into my shoes today and have a look through a hiring manager’s eyes - what we see when we look at your LinkedIn or CV or worse - BOTH
Here’s why you suck at selling yourself
Its because you know yourself so well
Its because you don’t know what we want to know
Its because you think sales and marketing isn’t your responsibility
Here’s what we want to know (hiring managers, recruiters and founders)
What have you done in the past?
What have you worked on
How many people you’ve worked with
When last did you lose your shit? (even though you’ll never tell me)
What are you capable of doing?
What programming languages have you worked with
What is your strongest language
When are you at your best
What do you want?
How much money
How much responsibility
What will keep you with us
Why do you want to leave your current co
Incorporate the answers to the above in your networking, meetings, interviews - you’re gonna go far kid - real far
INTERVIEW ADVICE
How to get paid above market

Some of you aren’t going to like this - the truth hurts
But before I spit some truth, let me give you some food for thought
Above market is relative - top of market in SA is also bottom of market in USA
This means that you have to chose your market
Going overseas usually puts you into a higher market range
A rising tide - can drown you if you don’t know how to swim, else raise you up
Now I don’t want you to drown, so pay attention
Moving into industries, technologies, and sectors that are growing and booming is your best bet to top-pay
Crytpo/Blockchain, AI and ML, Cyber Security - these are three industries and sectors that are booming hard right now and are paying top of market globally as well as locally (in SA)
Python, Ruby on Rails, Go Lang - these are 3 programming languages that are strongly in demand but hard to find quality talent for
Two Words - Full Stack
This is gaining more and more traction, especially in startups
Founders and teams want full stack developers, yes you can lean more towards front or backend, but at the end of the day, knowing both makes you more valuable
People will pay more for fewer people - rather pay 1 dev 120k-140k ZAR per month than 2 devs 80K ZAR
Now - The Hurtful Truth
A lot of you won’t commit to any of the above - the endless, sometimes seemingly pointless, hours spent networking, emailing and linkedin-ing (new word alert) that’s needed to find international opportunities
A lot of you want remote work, but don’t think that that actually will make it more difficult for you to find work - because it will increase competition, it will increase the availability of alternatives to you - which means, you gotta get not just better at your job, but much better
If you decide to not change programming languages, industries or geographies - you will have to do much more to become a top of market commanding developer in your industry - and you probably wont end up doing that either
But if you do want help - just reply to this email with your questions, i’ll be sure to see how I can help

New Data - Dev Shops Hiring
This is important data because dev shops are more likely to hire remote developers
They also pay a premium to get strong developers, because it makes them look good to their clients
You are their profit centre, so they want great devs to then sell services to their end clients
New Data - Company list that has freelancers and contractors working for them
These guys already use freelancers and contractors - so you have an easy in
Most objections you’d hear are companies saying they don’t work with freelancers, so this shows they don’t have the objection and that you’ve done the research
