Risk it to get the biscuit

First thing’s first - i had to google how to spell Biscuit - if it were up to me, it would be bizkit - but that’s neither here nor there

Today, we gonna be talking about risk, reward and how you should be thinking about risk in your career

In today’s issue

  • The Gig Economy

  • Making Bank with Career Advice

  • Are you proud of yourself?

Lets get stuck in

JOBS

Get a Gig

I guess i’m sending you to a competitor today

They’re not really, we do much longer term contracts and own the client relationships and dev relationships but i’ve thought of creating a similar platform to this

Its great for people very skilled at their craft - Dev, Data, Cloud etc

But if you’re not at least a solid 8/10 dev, i’d forget about it, competition is fierce for this roles, so you have to be much better than them to have the be convinced of paying UK rates for SA peeps

Thats why I said 8/10 - but if you are great - this platform will make you some great money

CAREER ADVICE

Risks and Biscuits 🍪

The Matrix is one of the best movies ever, and if you don’t think so, stop reading, unsubscribe, and leave my universe

Now that that’s out the way…

Let’s talk risk and reward

As a great rule of thumb - Your risk is inversely proportional to your age

Sorry to my old peeps reading this mail, struggling to manage the perfect distance between screen, resolution, and letter sizing - new glasses are in order, and I hear spec spavers does 2 for 1 deals.

Moving along, what does inverse proportionality mean for you?

Now, this basically means, the younger you are, the more risk you can take on, especially if you are just starting - you have an obligation to take risks.

Later on, you’re going to have cars, homes, partners, children, parents, all kinds of responsibilities to take on, that will reduce your risk appetite but also your risk tolerance (because the downside will be much higher) - this is where a lot of regret happens in people’s lives

So if we agree we should take more risks the younger and less experienced we are, what does that mean in a practical sense?

  1. Move yo’ ass: New city, New Country, New Job, New Responsibilies

  2. Train yo’ ass: Learn complimentary skills, take a course, study

  3. Test yo’ ass: Experiment, try new things, test ideas out, build something

You should notice that

  1. most of the above work well in combination together

  2. you don’t need to be young, middle age (me), or old (the one sub i’ve got that’s 60) - you can be any age and apply these strategies

There’s two things that happen in Technology - You Learn, then you Earn

If you’re not Learning, you’re Losing

Even if you think you’re earning good - maybe you are - but there is someone learning more, doing more, trying more - they will catch you, they will pass you, and you will be left behind

We have crazy SA politics and budgets, Increases in VAT, increases in Tarrifs - there’s too many obstacles and headwinds for you to not take this seriously

INTERVIEW ADVICE

When’s the last time you made yourself proud?

sorry for the poor resolution - yes I did steal this photo

Plagarism or copyright issues aside - this is a question I try to ask myself every year or so - especially around New Year Resolution time, but I tend to ask it ever so often

Recently

  • i’m proud to have launched this community

  • i’m proud to have gotten new business in a horrible business climate

But realistically, that’s not something to be too prideful about - I haven’t made myself proud in a while - probably the last time I actually made myself proud was 2 years ago when I decided to stop using my amazing looks and personality to just get girls and took a relationship seriously

Otherwise, i’ve done nothing lately to make myself proud

  • i’m in the process of buying a new business

  • i’m busy getting my motorbike license

  • i’m thinking of moving to Lisbon

I know what will make me proud but i’m scared of doing that - cause I know the effort its going to take and my lazy ass is winning right now

Find something that will make you proud and do that - then talk about what’s made you proud in your interviews

Here’s mine:

  1. Studied in USA on a full academic scholarships at one of the best universities - Proof of Rankings Here

  2. Trained over 100 people in Microsoft Office 365 during the start of the Covid pandemic to ensure continuous business delivery and uptime - while successfully delivering 3 digitization projects

  3. Created a profitable business generating over 2million ZAR per year in 8 months

  4. Trained with World Champion boxer Cassius Baloyi and won two ametuer boxing fights

Imagine this - i’ve done millions of Rands in Sales, I have a successful business, I have a body most people can only dream of, i’ve travelled the world - and I still don’t think i’ve done anything recently to make myself proud…

Go up your standards and go make yourself proud
