Ok now lets talk remote work

And whether it's for you or not

Sorry im sending this at 9pm on a sunday 😄 I’ve been working remote since Feb 2020

Which is crazy now that i think about it - i’ve been doing it for 5 years!!! thats awesome

Never thought i’d work remote to be honest - or at best, i thought about Hybrid.

JOBS

This is for my Javascript peeps

This job board is pretty awesome, very active and has a filter for REMOTE

That being said, don’t just look at remote only - there are plenty of companies, that arent remote, that have remote developers

How does that work?

Well, they don’t mind having 1 or 2 people being fully remote, but most of the employees come into the office, and they always say to their employees “these guys are contractors, they’re not the same as you"

So doesnt need to be remote to apply

CAREER ADVICE

If you’re not great at your job - get to the office ASAP Rocky

When is remote work not for you?

  • When you suck at your job, honestly, you’re going to be way worse remote - i had a junior dev that was like a 5/10 developer in the office - from home, he was closer to 3/10 - and you guessed it, he was moved off my project

  • When you want to learn a lot from great people, its far easier when you’re in the office and can develope that relationship with them and they can start mentoring you or you can start shadowing them

  • When you have too many distractions at home or no reliable office setup (remote office or working location) - im literally writing this, half naked, on a dinning table, watching an episode of Chris Williamson lol - but im ok with that

  • When you dont have discipline, focus or motivation - having a dedicated office, work clothes, routine, all these can help you with getting the work done

Remote is great, my company would not exist without it - we literally need remote work to spread so we can grow as a business

STILL

remote work is not for everyone, it can create opportunity, but it can also really mess things up for you

Make sure you know what you want

Btw, one of the best front end devs, Brandon (he is subscribed, i hope you’re reading this) - he is an absolute machine, great developer - he hates remote haha he wants to go to an office, he likes that vibe, culture, team.

So you can be the best developer ever, but remote could still not be for you

INTERVIEW ADVICE

Dont try to impress me

The above image is how most of you think I act reading your CV, or cover letter, or listening to your answers

Spoiler ALERT ⚠️

It’s really really not

Now don’t be affended, hold off with the mechanical keyboard warrior spirit

Here is what i really mean - I want to get to know you!

  • what have you done,

  • what are you working on,

  • what is something you’re proud of,

  • what do you think about XYZ or solving ABC

I don’t want you to impress me with what you could possibly, maybe, somehow, one day in the near future but not sure when future, do or achieve.

A lot of you, maybe its insecurities, maybe its inexperience with interviewing, maybe its desperation trying to get the job so trying to figure out what i want to hear - but a lot of you, just don’t talk about yourself, you talk about a possibility, about this vague future.

Go answer the above questions, thats the best talking points, and the most interesting talking points for interviews

And then, i’ll have my butter salted popcorn in hand 🍿
