CAREER ADVICE
Burning candles at both ends

Btw, I asked chat GPT to make this image for me, it took two tries and 15 minutes… so maybe its burning out - poor baby robot
Ok so lets talk burnout, I actually feel like I am close which is another reason I wanted to write this article, but this is how i’m going to be dealing with it
Identifying Burnout
It could be different for everyone, but here's my red/amber flags
Sleep, usually I sleep like a baby, but when im exhausted, I sleep way less and with more wake up times in the night
Nerves, I stopped biting my nails about 4 years ago, but when im anxious and stressed out, I start biting my thumbnails (thankfully the other 8 are safe)
Exercise, I gym 5 to 7 times a week, have done so for probably close to 12 years, if I train less or if my sessions shorten or are weaker, I know my body isnt where it wants to be
Dopamine, social media, alcohol and sex - when i meaningfully increase these, especially the first 2, I know im at my limits, the last one, doesnt increase or decrease in quantity, but it does in quality and time… #twopumps
Figure out what your burnout is - it could be watching TV shows, smoking, drinking, partying, whatever it is, to escape the obvious that you are not at all in control of your time, your energy and your outputs/outcomes.
Then you gotta look at how to manage this
This is my plan of attack:
Rest, in the middle of July, I'm taking 5 business days and 2 weekends—these 9 days are going to set me up for success. Otherwise, I take a day off (usually, I work 7 days a week, weekends only about 2-3 hours). So when I'm not too burnt out, I just take a day off or take the weekends off.
Work, leaving work at work isnt easy, so i try to look at hobbies and enjoyable things as work - I look at reading as working, exercise as working, basically I reframe things I like doing into a work context so I dont have to feel guilty about not working.
Naps, personal favorite, dont do them as much as I should now that its summer, but i while i was working in the office years ago, i’d have my silver mercedes e-class in the basement parking, id recline the leather seat and take a fat nap
Dates, I set a date when I will rest, or a time when I no longer work no matter what, these barriers or boundaries become easier with time, so start small if its difficult for you
Last week I took Wednesday off to go to the beach, my biggest client has a new project for us and during a call on Tuesday with them, the CEO asked for another meet on Wednesday - told him i’m phones off, at the beach, so Thursday or Friday, we met Thursday.
Bitch and Moan, I am very much looking forward to talking smack about the struggles of entreprenuership and the pains along the way, vent it out, get some advice or feedback if needs be but mostly just let it out.
Plan, this is so that while im away, i know when i get back, its not a shit show, i know what to do, i know where i left off, i know what i should take over again - its super important, i basically have a short list of priorities and action items - this last step, step 6, is probably my most imporant, so i can enjoy all the other steps
Personally, I cant wait for my little break and having time away from technology and the screens
Dont worry, i’ll write my newsletter in advance and schedule it, so you wont miss me 😉
What about you? Do you know your burnout queues? Are you close to burning out? What are you going to do about it?

INTERVIEW ADVICE
How to 💩 on your current employer

People dont leave companies, they leave people, but bitchin and moaning to your potential new employer about your past employer is not a good look (see above)
So what can you do?
The only thing you can do is to not do it - Let me explain
Just dont do it, do this instead
What are you bitching about?
Why are you moaning about it?
Who are you bitching about?
When are you moaning most?
Answer these questions and then use them to talk to the new employer, eg:
Who you bitch about is your boss - Then what makes a good boss to you, what do you respect, admire and what makes you work hard for them, try to identify if the future boss has these qualities
When you moan the most - is it during high pressure weeks, is it when you havent had leave, is it when deployments are on Fridays! See how the new employer handles these things.
Dont talk shit, just find out if that shit you had before is coming with you or staying behind, thats the best use of shit talking, find out what, why, how and who, then making sure that shit is in the past

PERSONAL STUFF
This is a new section
I started doing half marathons
Every sunday morning around 9 or 10am, after i’ve worken up, had a light breakfast and coffee (more about coffee next week) - I then go do this 21 km run
This was my first 21km ever, did it in just over 2 hours. Usually I run, 10-14km every weekend, this time I wanted something more
I did this the following week and instead of 2h06min i did it in 2h11sec - A 6 minute improvement, actually exactly a 6-minute improvement
The goal is half marathons every weekend and shorter 10km runs during the week, like a Wednesday.
Towards the end of June, im going to run a marathon (42km, but my own way, there is no event or anything)
Im kinda scared for the Marathon haha but its going to be a beautiful run along the coast of Portugal and

THATS A WRAP
