JOBS
A Job Board for Africans
I found this job board on Monday morning while sipping on a coffee and getting ready for my morning rituals - i.e. doom scrolling insta while sitting on the toilet
What I really like about this job board
It’s specifically for Africans only
You can even filter by country (so ZA-specific job posts)
You don’t need to sign-up (which is free) to use the job search
It’s mostly international companies that want to hire in Africa or are already hiring in Africa
How you can use this board
You should find the companies hiring on Linkedin,
Reach out to their founders, CEOs, CTOs and Tech Leadership
Message that you saw they are interested in African tech talent - and continue the convo from there
Hope you enjoy

CAREER ADVICE
Ghost Jobs 101

What are they, why are they here and who do they benefit?
The What - this is the simplest explanation, they are basically job posts that companies never intend to fill in the first place
The Why - this is more aptly titled the Why’s (plural)
Optics - make it look like the company is hiring, growing, or healthy
Research - understand market salary, supply and quality of labour force
Pressures - mostly on existing employees, to show more people could be coming in, and they can be replaced if they don’t fall in line
Timelines - a lot of HR teams are measured on Time To Fill - this is a KPI that shows how quickly they can fill a role, and if they post fake jobs, they get candidates, that they can later try to hire when the real job does come up
The Who - who’s benefiting here?
This is the crux of the issue - the who is the bastard employer, they can very affordably get the above results, with just spending $500-10’000$ per year on these kinds of job posts
10K sounds dear, but it is nothing in corporate budget speak - they can blow through that in one day on client schmoozing
And if its a recruitment agency doing the ghost job posting, well then, they take your data, and sell it to companies - and then try to sell you with it
Ghost jobs aren’t a pretty thing in the industry, and job boards don’t help much either - they just want people to pay to post jobs or keep jobs posted, so they’re profiting from it too!
Final Thoughts
This is why, after applying for a job, don’t just sit and wait - try to reach out to the company themselves and speak to people at the company
Also, don’t get discouraged, you know these fake jobs exist, accept it as part of the game.

INTERVIEW ADVICE
Getting Ghosted

I’ve always found that interest and time are very closely correlated - whenever there is strong interest their is short time and when there is weak interest, there is long time.
If you see time slipping away, a good rule of thumb is to assume the interest is too.
Getting ghosted sucks, but its also part of the game
Here’s how to manage ghosts
Flip em the bird
Jk, don’t do that, but you can reach out
Let them know its okay if there is no more interest, you just want confirmation
Ask for feedback and advice on your interviews, your CV or what you can do to get more interviews etc - they might have some contacts they can share you to
Set a reminder for 6 months to follow up with them, they might have another opportunity in the future.
Dont take it personally - sometimes people forget, sometimes people don’t care for their jobs, sometimes people don’t care for others. You keep on keeping on

LEGAL ADVICE
Talk to David

Im going to be linking he’s LinkedIn HERE
A lot of you have written to me about talking to accountants
where to find them
who do I recommend
how much you should pay
If you need a star accountant who will look after you and has morals that even his best friend (me) cannot bend (I have tried…) then you should reach out to him
He will look after you
BUT he does charge for his services, so you should only look to reach out to him if you’re willing to pay for accounting services

THATS A WRAP
Before you go: Here’s 3 ways I can help you
LinkedIn - I’m always hiring - but only 2 to 4 people a month - connect with me on and send me your CV - currently, I only hire people with 7 or more years of experience - if you have less, but are EXCEPTIONAL, i’ll make exceptions
Youtube - i’m always making content to help you out, subscribe and binge
Free Career Advice - i’m going to be giving away CV feedback for early subscribers for free, I usually charge $100 for a resume roast - i’ll make a recording and send you feedback - just reply back to this email with your CV - its totally free for first 10 people
